Called one of the best places to live in the country more than once, Novato offers residents a small-town, suburban feel and relative affordability. It’s about 30 miles from San Francisco, so the commute takes an hour (sometimes an hour and a half depending on where your starting point is in Novato).
 
Home lots tend to be bigger in Novato, and you can even find horse properties here. Amenities include Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Vintage Oaks Shopping Center, which offers standard strip mall fare like Target and Costco. 
 
Downtown Novato is lined with historical buildings that have been preserved with care, such as City Hall, a Carpenter Gothic church built in the 1890s. On weekends, Grant Street becomes pedestrian-only, making it easy to enjoy the shops and restaurants as you take in Novato’s gorgeous weather. At Pioneer Park, about a mile from there, you’ll have access to nine acres of green space, including paved biking trails and tennis courts. Head south to The Marin Museum of Contemporary Art to view the rotating exhibitions of local and international artists, or visit the Hamilton Wetlands, where bird-watching is unparalleled.
