Just off of Highway 1, about 20 miles north of San Francisco, you’ll come across the tiny hamlet of Stinson Beach. With just about 600 residents as of 2019, this community is perfect if you’re looking for a laid-back, outdoor lifestyle or a city getaway for the weekends. The architecture consists of quaint bungalows, single-family homes, and mansions nestled into the hillsides overlooking the ocean.

Founded by people escaping the aftermath of San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake, Stinson Beach now serves as a haven for people seeking white-sand beaches and plentiful hiking. It’s part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Point Reyes National Seashore. If you’re a trail enthusiast, you’re sure to enjoy being close to the Dipsea Trail, which starts here and ends in Mill Valley. Along the way, you’ll wind through portions of Mount Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods National Monument. While nature is the main event here, there are a handful of fabulous cafes and restaurants to choose from, and even a saloon, Smiley’s.
