Mill Valley Film Festival! Oct 6-16th
The Annual Mill Valley Film Festival will start up on October 6th, playing movies and hosting speakers at multiple venues across Marin, Berkeley and San Francisco.

GLASS ONION: A Knives Out Mystery is a 2022 American mystery film written and directed by Rian Johnson, and produced by Johnson and Ram Bergman for T-Street Productions. A standalone sequel to Knives Out (2019), Daniel Craig reprises his role as Benoit Blanc, a master detective taking on a new case.
 
ARMAGEDDON TIME: A coming-of-age story about the strength of family and the generational pursuit of the American dream. Armageddon Time is a 2022 American period drama film written, directed, and produced by James Gray, inspired by his childhood upbringing in Queens.

WOMEN TALKING: A 2022 American drama film written and directed by Sarah Polley, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Miriam Toews. Women in an isolated religious colony struggle to reconcile with their faith after a series of sexual assaults.

TILLL: An upcoming American biographical drama film directed by Chinonye Chukwu and written by Michael Reilly, Keith Beauchamp, and Chukwu. It stars Danielle Deadwyler, Jalyn Hall, Frankie Faison, Haley Bennett, and Whoopi Goldberg.

THE WHALE: A 2022 American psychological drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky, from a screenplay written by Samuel D. Hunter, based on Hunter’s 2012 play of the same name. The film stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins.

NANNY: The horror genre continues to prove it can raise provocative themes better than most other types of film, and director/screenwriter Nikyatu Jusu’s feature debut wants to attest to that. Anna Diop stars as an immigrant from Senegal who cares for a wealthy New York City couple’s daughter while dealing with demons of her own, as well as those dwelling in America. 

THE GOOD NURSE: Since the festival opens with an anticipated Netflix production, why not then close with another upcoming Netflix conversation-starting release? Oscar winners Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne summon acting fireworks in this based-on-a-true-story psychological thriller set in a hospital. Its Bay Area premiere is Oct. 16 with director Tobias Lindholm, Redmayne and actor Nnamdi Asomugha, who played football at UC Berkeley, slated to attend.
 
FANTASTIC NEGRITO: HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND YET?: In this world premiere, Oakland resident Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz — best known as blues artist Fantastic Negrito — confronts issues from his past as he creates his most personal recording project yet. The co-directing team of Yavan Iturriaga and Francisco Nunez Capriles hail from the East Bay.
 
FAULTLINE: In the beautiful underwater reefs off the coast of Florida’s pastoral Pajaro Island, a fissure rips open in the ocean floor. When graduate student Greg Chambers encounters the seismic readings, he rushes to tell his professor, Anthony McAlister. Greg suspects that a massive earthquake is about to give the small island a rude awakening. To make matters worse, the epicenter is right under Pajaro Island’s new resort, where Anthony’s estranged wife Lynn is working.

THE ART OF EATING: THE LIFE OF M.F.K. FISHER: Mill Valley Film Festival tantalized everyone’s taste buds with Julie Cohen and Betsy West’s “Julia” documentary (on Julia Child), and this year, the festival turns the focus on the world premiere of a foodie documentary about an influential food writer who lived in the Napa-Sonoma Wine Country. Gregory Bezat of San Francisco directs.
 
SIMON REX • RED ROCKET: Red Rocket is a 2021 American black comedy drama film directed by Sean Baker from a screenplay co-written with Chris Bergoch. It stars Simon Rex, Bree Elrod, and Suzanna Son. The plot follows a porn star (Rex) who returns to his hometown and begins a relationship with an adolescent girl (Son).
 
PAOLO SORRENTINO • THE HAND OF GOD: The Hand of God (Italian: È stata la mano di Dio, lit. ’It was the hand of God’) is a 2021 Italian drama film written, directed, and produced by Paolo Sorrentino. It stars Filippo ScottiToni ServilloTeresa Saponangelo, Marlon Joubert, Luisa RanieriRenato CarpentieriMassimiliano Gallo, Betti Pedrazzi, Biagio Manna, and Ciro Capano. The film refers autobiographically to Sorrentino’s youth in Naples.
 
DENIS VILLENEUVE • DUNE: Adapted from Frank Herbert’s cult novel, tells the story of Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential — only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
 
C’MON C’MON • MIKE MILLS: A 2021 American black-and-white drama film written and directed by Mike Mills. It stars Joaquin PhoenixGaby HoffmannScoot McNairy, Molly Webster, Jaboukie Young-White, and Woody Norman. The film had its world premiere at the 48th Telluride Film Festival.
 
PASSING | NINA YANG BONGIOVI, REBECCA HALL &  RUTH NEGGA: Passing had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 30, 2021, and began a limited theatrical release on October 27, 2021, prior to streaming on Netflix on November 10. The film received acclaim from critics, who praised Hall’s screenplay and direction, and performances of Thompson and Negga. The film was named one of the top ten films of 2021 by the African American Film Critics Association.[4] For her performance, Negga was nominated for the Golden Globe AwardBAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress.
 
CLOSING NIGHT PARTY
The closing film is from the UK Premiere of Medusa, following it’s debut at Cannes Directors Fortnight. Inspired by mythical and real-life violence by women against women and set against a backdrop of toxic masculinity and right-wing politics, the second feature by Brazilian filmmaker Anita Rocha da Silveira sees a group of Christian women gang up to attack women who they judge to be too liberal or too promiscuous in this horror-musical-comedy.

TheWrap Screening Series: Wright scrubbed Cyrano’s trademark prosthetic proboscis to highlight the character’s fear of intimacy in less literal ways.
 
OPENING NIGHT GALA
This spectacular gala showcased the extraordinary soprano Renée Fleming in three different, equally dazzling roles, each costumed by a different designer.

MVFF TRIBUTE: KENNETH BRANAGH
Features an onstage conversation with Kenneth Branagh, a screening of Belfast, and the presentation of the MVFF Award.
